Twitter is NOT Instant Messaging

twitter.png Over the weekend, I had to stop following a Twitter user because they used the platform to have lengthy one-on-one discussions with other individual Tweets.

This is the equivalent of 2 people dominating the conversation at a dinner party – it’s mindnumbing for the rest of us.

If you find yourself engaging in a good conversation with just one other person, use the private message function. From there, you can exchange information to send emails or messages through an IM client.

Always know your audience, folks. Always know your audience!

  1. Oh, Nathania, I couldn’t agree more! It’s one thing to tweet back a couple times, but any more than that is just plain obnoxious. I only follow 23 people for that reason.

Nathania, I’m normally a fairly quiet tweeter but I think If fell into that trap myself over the weekend…

All I can say is that it was a surprisingly easy one to fall into…

this is so true! I had recently started using it and already feel so left out that I’m thinking twice to tweet about anything now… whats most discouraging is when your @someone tweet doesn’t get replied to, but you can see they are chatting away with other people.

Great points that I think we can easily lose site of.
    Love the dinner party analogy.

  5. That’s just one of the many reasons I really can’t deal with Twitter on a daily basis.

I did have the Skype4Twiiter option working, but I was getting an avalanche of Tweets, which in the end killed my pig — so to speak…

  6. eek. i cannot say anything. i’m guilty of that a few times. am being careful to stop it thou. and yes, moving to DM is a good idea. maybe we need to have something that if we post to the same person @ for so many times in a row it gets automatically moved to DM – that could be intergrated into twhirl i bet?

Gonna blog about it – feel free to add me! – @philcampbell. :)
