StumbleUpon Buttons I’d Like to See
December 23, 2007
As many of you know, StumbleUpon is my favorite social bookmarking tool.
If you have the toolbar installed, you’ll see a “Like It” button with a thumbs up and a thumbs down button. It helps SU know what type of sites you like to see, but it also can be seen by others along with comments about the page (click the comment cloud icon for that feature).
But sometimes I feel like I want 2 more buttons.
The first is an I LOVE IT! button. Of course, I would use this for cute kitties, pictures of Old Hollywood movie stars, Jacqueline Norvogratz’s speech on patient capitalism at this year’s TED conference, and Ryan Karpeles’ amazing guest post over at Conversation Agent.
The second is a This Is Important! button. Sometimes, I come across pages with information I don’t like, but that I find very valuable. One example is the Top 10 Underrated Humanitarian Stories of 2007. You see, I don’t like that there is a crisis in Somalia similar to that in Darfur. I don’t like that there is so much violence in the Central African Republic. I don’t like the volatile situation that remains in Chechnya. And I really don’t like that the media concentrates more on Britney Spears than on these far more important matters. But I do want others to read about these stories. Maybe more so than some of the other stumbles. (I give a thumbs up anyway so that the site reaches more people.)
So those are two buttons I’d like to see on StumbleUpon. What would you like to see?

Those are both great ideas. Sometimes I do ‘like’ a story but I think it is important news and should be seen by more people - an Important button would be great.
I would like a button that says - Stolen, Duplicate Content. I am so tired of seeing websites that exist only to serve up ads along with other people’s content. The people who run these types of sites see something interesting on the ‘net, grab it, post it on their own site and claim it as their own - making no attempt to credit the source.
This is a disgusting, lazy-minded practice and it’d be great to be able to deny these scum the benefits of the StumbleUpon community.

I agree SU could use a few new buttons that make it especially easier to bookmark important finds. I spend a lot of time on SU and sometimes I get so involved in the exciting action of SU that I forget to eat. Id like to suggest an “Order a Pizza” button.. lol
Good useful post!

Hey Nathania - I agree that there should be an Important button. I stumbled across something similar (most shocking photos of 2007 or something like that), and while it captured great photos of this last year, there were images that I didn’t particularly enjoy viewing.
I wish there was maybe a Neutral button. A button that might let you view the site again if you’re not too sure where you stand when you first view it. There are many sites that I don’t like or dislike, so I just hit the stumble button and don’t vote either way. I would like for there to be an Ask Me Later type button so that I can view the site again and vote.

I would like to see a SEND TO ALL button. There are websites I love and want to send to all my friends…its annoying to have to click each person.

Another useful button could be Duplicate. This would say that stumble upon system needs to check its database for duplicated images/text/movies from this page.

I like the idea, but I fear that too many viewers would attach “Important” to a site dedicated to Star Wars films completely re-created in Etch-A-Sketch images.

I want there to be a Stumble Hotkey.
Sometimes the touchpad is just too slow.

There should be a “I have already seen this” button…I have seen the acid trip drawings over 9000 times, and they are getting old.
I think it would also be useful to be able to organize your “Like its” on your account, because some I have tried to go back to, only to realize they are 30 pages ago, because I am a stumble whore. Possibly color coding or organizing in folders.

There also needs a “Yeah, its okay, but this is the 37th time I’ve seen it.” button.

God, will people never stop bitching about SU? If you can do better, then do it yourself!

This is a great idea. Hope someone out there reads this and acts.
I’ve often wished I had a little more leeway when picking out sites I like.
I also agree with Carados. It’d be nice to stop seeing some sites umpteen times.

I would like to see a “duplicate” button, so you can flag an item that has already come up
