Adbazz.com Redirects Sites Using Tracking Code Supplied by WebsourcedTraffic.com
September 24, 2007
Some business owners got a shocking surprise today when their websites were being redirected to an Adbazz.com URL. Former customers of Websourced (also known as Keyword Ranking and Marketsmart Interactive) are being redirected to this URL if an old tracking code still exists on their sites.
Websourced eventually abandoned the project but this code has remained on many of client’s web sites with no adverse affect untill now.
Site owners experiencing this issue can simply remove the following code in order to restore their sites:
<script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" defer="true">
var script = document.createElement('script');
script.type = 'text/javascript';if (location.href.substr(0,6).toLowerCase() == 'https:')
script.src = "https://www.websourcedtraffic.com/semws_tfc.js";
else
script.src = "http://www.websourcedtraffic.com/semws_tfc.js";document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(script);
</script>
and also,
<noscript><img src="http://www.websourcedtraffic.com/image.tfc "></noscript>
You will know you have it if visiting your site redirects you to this page at www.adbazz.com with WebSourcedTraffic.com as a Heading:

It would appear that the domain that used to be the home of the app is now feeding redirect code to those who still having the tracking tags installed. I would imagine that while WebSourced is still the registered owner, someone with poor intentions has gotten their hands on the domain and is replacing the old tracking include with a redirection include.
MarketSmart Advertising (the owner of the domain) is aware of the issue and is looking for ways to remedy the situation as quickly as possible.
UPDATE:
After talking to an old buddy at MSA, it would appear that this is some sort of issue with Network Solutions and how they handle 3rd party requests to non-resolving sites. He is working on getting a 404 page hosted at WebsourcedTraffic.com so that the request will resolve rather than going to the strange Network Solutions error redirect.
I wonder how many people have 3rd party includes on their sites where the request no longer resolves and NS is pulling the same redirect on them?
Are you having this same issue? Tell us about it in the comments.
UPDATE 2:
I just heard from my buddy at MSA again and the fix worked. If you were being redirected because of the old WebSourcedTraffic.com code, even if you still have the code on your site, that redirect will no longer occur. You most likely want to remove the code anyway though.
UPDATE 3:
This issue seems to be a lot larger than I originally thought. You are commenting all kinds of configurations and manifestations of the adbazz redirects that are way beyond my original experience.
If you have remedied your particular iteration, please comment your issue and your resolution. If you are still having the issue, let us know about it. Presently we are getting close to 200 people a day on “adbazz” related searches to this post so let’s figure this thing out while Google keeps us all in the same place.

Thanks for the info - A friend emailed me about his being redirected from my blog to Blogmad.net - I thought it was a blogmad problem until I saw the word Adbazz. Googled Adbazz and found your posting. - I emailed Blogmad with this link, Removed (temporarily) their code from my blog and still have the problem. - I’ve been contantly clearing cache and cookies as I go in case the rectal apertures are trying to load keystroke and such like bugs. - Suggest others do too!. I’ll do what I can from my end as a concerned citizen and let you know if I find a fix for my blogspot website.
Thanks again - Paul - prying1 -

I found another little bit of Blogmad code on my sidebar. Cleared it out and no more redirect. Hooray!
Seems to me this would make for at least a blurb in the news. - How many websites were effected?

Not just sites. It took over the hosting on our domain. We run a very good filtering server. So because adbazz was filtered we just simply resolved pages that stated that we had to contact our administrator to restore service. I found the redirect looking at our location in Laredo Tx to see if that site was experiencing the same problem as the Salinas home office. I found a machine that would show the adbazz URL in address bar for a secons before the error would resolve on the page.

I have a machine that is being redirected whenever I try to get to Microsoft. It is constantly asking that adbaaz.com be added as a safe site. Any thoughts on this.

I started having whatever web site I was going to, re-routed by adbaaz.com about 2 weeks ago. I’ve been fighting with it since then with no positive results. As a last resort, I am about to reformat my computer to see if that gets rid of this nightmare. I will try to contact a friend who works with computers and is extremely educated, to see if he is aware of adbaaz.com. If he has knowlege of this problem and has a solution to it, I will pass it along.
I sincerely hope so, because I’m lost with this one.

I have seen this redirect starting today on several websites including MSN.com and Juniper.net. I thought it was adware on my computer since it happens on unrelated websites. A scan didn’t turn up any adware. So I googled adbaaz and found this site. Should I report this to the webmasters of all the sites I see it on?
October 11th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I am still experiencing a redirect to adbaaz.com while trying to retrieve info via the Wayback Machine from a site who’s domain name has expired. When I click on any link from the search results page: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://Drgrodnerrapidchange.com I get redirected to adbaaz. It doesn’t seem right that this company should be able to hijack pages from the Wayback Machine.

Wow…
This issue has turned out to be much bigger than I had previously experienced. Thanks so much to all of your for sharing your trials and tribulations.
Has anyone had any luck tracking this issue to a specific source?
In my experience, the issue was tied to Network Solutions. Can anyone dig dipper into the different iterations of this problem?
It looks like there are a couple of instances where this is happening:
1. At the URL level on specific websites with outdated code tied to a improperly parked Network Solutions url.
2. Somehow tied to browser functionality. If its a browser issue, maybe a plugin or ad ware is using an old network solutions DNS.
I would recommend that anyone still having this issue get the word out on webmaster forums and lets see how far reaching this is. Whatever you learn, be sure to repost your findings back here.
Thanks again to you all for being so helpful.

I have been trying to fix 3 systems for one of the companies I work for, all three of them will at random times, and on random sites be redirected to the sitehttp://www.adbaaz.com/?original site
where original site is the original site they were attempting to get to. I have used 3 different spyware cleaners, and 3 different virus scanners with no luck in fixing it on these systems.
This particular company has >10 systems, all using the same DNS elements on the same network, but only 3 of them seem to be doing this. All are XP Pro O/S, using IE7 with the latest updates.
This is very painful to debug, since there seems to be no logic in the sites, or times that this occurs. They may get redirected, give me a call, and when I get on their system, sometimes it seems to work fine, and other times it does the redirect. Doing an nslookup using different root DNS servers seems to make no difference.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Chris,
One of the issues we saw with the WebSourcedTraffic.com code was that because there was no site at that url, Network Solutions was sending an error that was being redirected to Adbazz. Once my buddy at at Market Smart Advertising put a site up with proper 404 errors, the problem remedied it’s self on those affected sites.
That would make me think that any code that errors or fails to load, that is hosted on a site with a Network Solutions registration or DNS and that do not have 404s set up at the server level or no server to point to for whatever reason will default to the Network Solutions error which would then load Adbazz because Network Solutions sucks.
Is anyone out there smart enough to test this hypothesis?

My provider had me on the phone yesterday, working on the adbaaz problem. He had me go into the internet history and delete it. He had me delete the cookies as well. When I say he had me delete the internet history, I mean you go into My Computer, into c drive and get to them from there…and delete from there, not simply in your drop down from the address bar. My pr ovider also said that other customers have called with the adbaaz problem and that’s how they fixed it, with success.
I’m a computer dummy so, I had a friend come over 1 & 1/2 weeks ago and delete the history… I didn’t know there was more hidden internet history files and cookies. They were the problems. Since my provider had me delete those, I have had no problem with being redirected to adbaaz.
I hope it works for anyone wanting to try it for themselves.
Good luck!
October 19th, 2007 at 10:12 am
I would like to know if Chris was ever able to figure out anything with the redirection to adbaaz problem. I also have a company that for the last couple weeks have the exact symptoms that he described. Some users will at radom times get redirected to adbaaz.com or some other ad site. It does not affect all users and the timing is very radom, very hard to figure out. I too have tried virus/spyware scanning with no luck. I will try the solution that mysticwolf1 provided to see if manually deleting all cookies, history, temp internet files will make a difference or not. I hope it does because I am out of ideas. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Nathan,
Check your site for any possible third party code. My thoughts are that if the third party code doesn’t load for one reason or another, if the site uses a NetworkSolutions dns, it will cause a funky error that will redirect the site to Adbazz.
Let me know of you find 3rd party code on your site and what site it refers to.
October 19th, 2007 at 10:58 am
Adam,
When you say check your site, you mean check the company’s website? The sites that we are having this problem are on msn.com, google, ebay, to name a few. I wouldn’t think that those sites would have bad code on them. The particular company that is having this problem is setup in an AD, with all computers getting their DNS from three company dns servers. I’m not sure what external dns servers the internal dns servers are getting their records from, but I know we have tried changing the external DNS servers to see if that made any difference or not.
Thanks for your quick reply. If I am not understanding your suggestion please let me know. Thanks again!
October 19th, 2007 at 10:59 am
I don’t have a positive answer as yet. I do know the problem I am seeing is not associated with NetworkSolutions, or DNS. I have gone to a couple of the systems, and manually deleted the users Temp, Temporary Internet, Cookies, and History files. We will see if that helps.
From what I am seeing, there may be some ghost image in one of these that may be causing the randomness.
I have also found a startup entry in the registry that has no data assigned to it, since it is a useless entry, I remove it. There is a Trojan/Virus that will create an entry like that, however I could find no evidence that any other portion of that trojan was on these systems.
October 19th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
That is beyond my experience. The issue I was privy to was a third party server request issue not a client side issue. Let me know if you learn more as that sounds like something else causing the same problem.
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:36 am
Since reporting what my provider had me do as far as deleting internet history and hidden files, I began to experience the same problem over the last 4 days.
Apparently, I am now being hijacked by 2 different sites; adbaaz and Gateway. Just today, we went throught my computer again, checking this and that. We found adbaaz and Gateway all over the place.
A thought is that these 2 hijacking sites have attached themselves deep inside Internet Explorer. We tried to install a different web browswer and were unable to do so. The computer was not allowing it. Confusing? Yes.
I’m thinking now the only and last resort is to do a reformat.
Is anyone else experiencing hijacking by Gateway as well as adbaaz.com?
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:45 am
Where exactly are you finding files that are refering to adbaaz or Gateway? I know with the problem we are having I have not be able to find any files that relate to adbaaz.
Are you being redirected to these sites all the time or just radom times? What sites are you trying to go to when you get redirected? In our case the users get redirected when trying to visit sites like; msn, google, ebay, among others. The weird part is that sometimes they are able to go to those sites and other times they are not, without making any chances to their computer.
I am about out of ideas, just wanting to see if the problem you are having is the same thing we are having, sounds like it is. I hope it does not come down to having to reformat the computer to get rid of this issue. If that is the case there are several computers that I would have to reformat. Let me know if you find anything more out. Thanks.
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:05 pm
We went in and checked the cookies and files in c drive. We had deleted them all, checked security settings, did a scan, then tried to go to eBay. It worked but only temporarily, Gateway came up. The sites I go to are few, only ones where I can list my product to get my name out there for a new start up business, like My Space, Black Planet, and eBay. Check the file that holds your cookies, scroll down the list and see if it has adbaaz or Gateway there. Since you still have this problem, don’t be surprised to find some there. I am beind redirected randomly at first, then more and more often until I can no longer get to the site I want at all. I just again had someone else I know who is very computer educated look at it and said I need to reformat. That’s 3 people now, looking at my computer, all saying I need to reformat. I’m believing them at this point. I see no end to this problem otherwise I would not reformat. I also found that some of my settings had been “changed” as well. Neither myself nor the 3 paople that looked at my computer changed them. I found this very odd to say the least. I know they didn’t change my settings as I sat right next to them while they were on my computer. Something else strange that I can not explain. Oh, might be important, maybe not… one of the people who looked at my computer thinks that there is a chance that these hijacking sites have attached themselves to my Internet Explorer. That being the case, we tried to D/L Firefox, another browser, then get rid of Internet Explorer. We couldn’t even get to it to D/L a different browser. You might want to consider doing that incase my friend is right about it. It might prove worth the time and therefore a reformat wouldn’t be necesary. Let me know if I’ve answered your question to your satisfication and if you do try to D/L another browser.
GOOD LUCK
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:51 pm
I am having the same problem regardless of which browser I use. I can stop the redirection from occuring if I set my browser security setting to High, but this also keeps the browser from working on many sites, e.g., and that use ActiveX controls, flash, youtube, webmail, etc.
My guess is that the redirect occurs when loading ActiveX controls - maybe/probably flash.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:47 am
We had this problem about a month ago and called Network Solutions (who is our DNS host and forwarder lookup) and they knew nothing about it. So I called our ISP who also has DNS forwarders that we just weren’t using.
(FYI a forwarder is the server that you’re sent to if the nearest DNS server doesn’t know what IP the requested site is).
So we were safe for about a month and then this morning it broke out all across our network. Any site we would try to get to would take us to that adbaaz crap. So I removed any Network Solutions forwarder that our internal DNS was pointing to and left it just using our ISPs DNS servers to lookup at. Cleared the cache on our internal DNS server and then had to go to every client (or reboot them) and do Start > run > cmd > ipconfig /flushdns (to clear the workstation DNS cache)
Somehow thus far I believe that this occurs when you ask a Network Solutions server for the IP of a website. (if it’s one of your DNS servers) It’s unfortunate but I think that’s ‘where’ the problem is. To resolve I had to use a non-network solutions DNS server as my lookup server and clear all cache server and client side.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:48 am
FYI all browsers need to be closed if using ipconfig /flushdns
October 25th, 2007 at 11:21 am
I’m on a mac, and I’ve tried Safari and Firefox, both give me the bloody adbaaz site.
October 25th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Thought I’d chip in a few more details. One of the web servers I manage hosts a site that suddenly developed a huge search index database - where there were formerly a couple hundred pages indexed, suddenly there were over 300,000.
That seemed weird. I extracted the cached copy of the pages as captured by our indexer (which only crawls our own sites) and it was the same kolmic dot com deal.
The server is quite well protected, I think - apache runs in a virtual host that is rebuilt from an offsite template every few days, the site content is on a read-only partition, and so on.
There’s no javascript on the pages. I did a full search of all files on the drive and the only places where any suspicious text (snippets from the page and links) could be found were the search index database, and web server access/error logs.
And yet there were supposedly 300K of these kolmic pages on there.
All I could figure was that there was a temporary domain hijacking around October 22. Some of what I’m reading here corroborates that (the site in question is registered through Network Solutions and ). I’ll keep looking into it, but at the moment I don’t see many likely alternatives.

When I view the misdirected page in source code, it shows the html for the site techguy.com, but then it gives the command to redirect. There must be a file somewhere telling it to do so, but I cannot find it. Here is the end of the code for the techguy.com site followed by the command to redirect:

It seems to me everyone is over anylizing this. It sounds to me that it is simply that some incorect DNS info got pushed out to the root servers at some point in time. At this stage of the game it apears as noones fault exept Casching. Each ISP casches root links for a certian period of time. If they are casching wrong dns info then its going to resolve sites to the wrong place. Sounds to be like all of your ISP’s need to reset there casche pages and that would solve the incorect resolution issue.
October 31st, 2007 at 7:34 am
I agree, can everyone verify that your querying a Network Solutions DNS server?
October 31st, 2007 at 9:22 am
Well, I did a little testing after the last few comments, and set one system to only use ns99.worldnic.com and it almost immediately stated pulling adbaaz. A second system using a RoadRunner DNS pair works just fine.

Hey gang,
It’s starting to look like you guys have figured this thing out.
If one of you who can follow the entire conversation (I’m at about 75%) want to write a summary post for the issue, I will post it and link to it from the top of this thread.
Thank you all so much for your help. There are a lot of people facing this odd little issue and I’m sure they are grateful for your time and energy. I know I am.

I get this problem. Seems to be a cached dns domain problem. My ISP is lost when it comes to this. So, I have to use a proxy like privoxy ; this proxy strips out advertisements and scripts from webpages. When I start getting the adbazz redirect I switch over to privoxy (proxy).
Those of you who are none technical should use proxy software that strips out advertisements; and email Google and tell them why you have to do this. When they figure out how much advertisement revenue they are losing they will send one of their 100K a year PHD’s to fix the problem finally.
Good Luck

I figured a new code that redirects to adbazz: I is used in a board software (Invision PowerBoard). The code line is
.After some research on the problem I found that the script does not exist and a redirect (HTTP 302 which means “moved temporarily”) is generated. The new script contains a
top.location="http://www.adbaaz.com/?dn=123a.info&flrdr=yes&nxte=js"and off you are…There is also a different behavior between Firefox (redirects) and IE (does not bother at all).
Hope this helps.

Here is the code line:
script type="text/javascript" src="http://123a.info/adv728.js"December 6th, 2007 at 5:42 am
It seems that some users are affected and others aren’t.
Probably there is some sort of hijacking by a 3rd party, may be a spyware, DNS forwarding, etc… I don’t know as it doesn’t happen to me. I have to conclude that the hijacking is happening at clients’ computers and not server-side as I can’t see even the javascript line that Henry mentioned, anywhere in the page’s source.

http://www.adbaaz.com is a nightmare, yesterday I turned on a server that had been down for a month and to day trying to use the IExplorer I get this adbaaz.com stuff, very disturbing, i cleared cache , temp files and cookies and still have this poping up.
any other suggestions?

I have just experienced this problem - a friend notified me that when she tried to access my blog she was being re-directed to another web site - at this point I had not experienced any problems but I copied and pasted the web url to check it out. It looked fairly innoccuous but when I tried to return to my blog which was set as my home page I was re-directed to the adbaaz site so presumably visiting the site activates something but I noticed that RadioBlog was included in the url - I had a java link to a radioblog playlist (like listening to on-line radio with all your favourite music) on my side-bar so I deleted the java script and this cleared the problem. I am assuming that perhaps the problem was with the radioblog site and as yet I have not paid a return visit to it. I did not notice anything untoward in the java script I deleted but I must admit that I really did not pay it much attention - I was just anxious to remove the problem. Prior to removing the java script I had checked the registry for any entry and found none, I had tried to correct my home page via internet tools in iexplore but of course it was as it should have been so I set the home page for a friend’s blog and from there was able to sign into and amend my blog. My advice to people encountering this problem would be to check or remove any java script on the affected site and replace it with valid script. The url itself may give some indication of where the problem is originating from.

To troubleshoot my suggestion that it’s a worldnic.com related DNS issue. Try changing your DNS server on your workstation. I suggest opendns.com ’s servers 208.67.222.222 ; 208.67.220.220 . As an administrator we’ve thought about switching our forwarders to opendns but at home i definately have my linksys router pointing to them as my static dns servers instead of my ISPs and on your workstation you can go start > control panel > network connections > right click > properties > TCP/IP > properties > enter these two servers in the primary and alternate DNS settings and click OK. Then do start > run > cmd (hit return) > type in ipconfig /flushdns and then try your page again. if it works its that your DNS forwarder is giving you false information.

our problem still exists, I have gone as far as uninstalling IExplorer and deleting references on hard drive and in the registery, but alass, it didn’t work, I used another (Unaffected computer) to dnload firefox and installed it and Adbazz.com was the first thing that poped up.. I am ready to pull my hair out. I did set all security settings to not run any Active X or scripts and just before Adbazz.com poped into the browser I got a pop up asking if I would allow Active X or scripts to run.. I said no but it made no difference,, Any other solutions to try?
I did spyware scans with Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor and they both came back with a clean report,

Christine, If you’re not happy with your ISP then I would stay with opendns ’s. read more around their site and you’ll see that they offer more services than your ISP likely does.
I’ve called Network Sol for DNS hosting issues and their tech support was amazing (and english speaking). It’s odd that they’re not more helpful for you.

Just blogging as mail artist I stopped using my blog “jnp &” () in order to use New Blogger - not sure to be able to transform that blog into the new system. However I didn’t delete it, still interesting for friends I think. But visiting it yesterday I was surprised to see it jump to another website that look strange to me. In fact it had the name of a friend website (mailart(dot)org) but looked as a spamsite and had a strange long URL.
After a while I discovered that my friend website had expired and was replaced by the same unknown page. Then I remembered that I had a link with javascript to the dead website. I went to Blogger dashboard and deleting it brought my blog back to normal. I was glad it was not a virus but didn’t like it.

We have been getting something totally different than anyone else. Whenever we access HTTP resources we get a Windows Security logon screen that wants to connect to www.adbaaz.com. We even have a program on our reps laptops that runs on IIS and it has no adbaaz at all in it, yet when we are connected to the internet it pops up and doesn’t pop up when not connected to the internet.

Everyone on our office network was affected by the adbaaz.com bad DNS redirect issue. A good fix given by our techs was to delete the Temporary Internet Files on the C: drive of each user. (Just deleting the Temporary Internet Files in the Browser does not work.) This is a good fix for the problem.
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
Close all applications on your computer.
At the bottom left on your screen, Right click Start/Select Explore.
Select: C:/Documents and Settings/Name of user/ Local Settings Folder/Temporary Internet Files. Click the first file in Temporary Internet Files. Click Control Key and A on keyboard at the same time to choose all files, Right Click and delete all files in Temporary Internet Files.
If you can’t see the Local Settings Folder: On Menu Bar click Tools/Folders/View
*Hidden files and Folders- change to show hidden files and folders.
*Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System files.
(Be sure to reverse this step after you Delete the Temporary Internet Files to turn these settings back on.)
After deleting the files, check your site to see that adbaaz is gone and the adbaaz.com logon window should no longer appear.
January 12th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Today everytime I open my internet explorer I get prompted to log into www.adbaaz.com. The same thing happens no matter which URL I enter. I have looked in the Event log and I get 2 events:
Source: LSASRV
Category SPNEGO
EventID 40961
The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server HTTP/www.adbaaz.com.
No authentication protocol was available.
and
EventID 40960
The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack for server HTTP/www.adbaaz.com. The
failure code from authentication protocol Kerberos was “There are currently no logon servers
available to service the logon request.
(0xc000005e)”.
So far I have Uninstalled Flash. In Tools/Managae Add ins I have disabled everything and have set custom security settings to promt for any scripts. But none of this works. If I use FireFox I don’t get this problem. Does someone know how to fix this problem for IE?

This happens to me when I try to use Myspace! So frustrating, because since, you know, I don’t OWN Myspace, I can’t actually change the script. Can anyone help? What should I do??

At first I was getting this everytime I was visiting 4shared or msn groups so what I did was…once it redirected to the adbaaz.com page, I then went into my control panel, internet options/security and then added that page to the restricted sites and now I can get to msn and such. Of course I tested it….by restricting and unrestricting. So it is a temporary fix until we can find out why it is happening.
