Are you the Bruce Campbell of your Blogging Niche?

Date September 21, 2007

Bruce Campbell Bruce Campbell is a self-proclaimed B-list actor and one of the stars of the awesome show Burn Notice on USA Network.

Bruce (can I call you Bruce?) knows his place in Hollywood and he seems to be perfectly fine with it.

If you’re struggling with not making it onto some mainstream blogrolls, then take some advice from Bruce. Here are some of his quotes about filmmaking that translate nicely to the blogosphere:

For a long time I was embarrassed to say I was a ‘B’ movie actor, … But now that I see what Hollywood’s putting out, I realized ‘B’ actually means ‘better.’

In both Hollywood and the blogosphere, it befuddles me that some people make the A-list. Some people just regurgitate what the others are doing. Others offer little value, arrogance, or follow the party line. No matter if you’re A-list, B-list or N-list (that would be Nathania’s list, the best one of all) - the best way to get me to subscribe to your RSS feed is to be original, thoughtful, and open.

The movies that are the easiest to make are the hardest to watch.

Good movies are difficult to make. The writing process alone is soul-wrenching. That’s why I’ve been procrastinating my next script for well over a year. (And why I have several feature length script ideas sitting on the shelf of my mind.) But then there’s production, locations, and casting. Oh my!

Blogging is deceptively difficult. It seems so easy. Just write your thoughts, slap some affiliate advertising on your site and BAM - you’re making 6 figures a year living large in South Beach. Not so fast. Writing, building an audience and participating in your niche’s community doesn’t happen overnight. And I hate to break it to you, but there are more people blogging than trying to become screenwriters (which is in the 55,000 range).

If that last sentence doesn’t deter you, then go for it. If you’d blog whether it enables you to quit your job or not, you’re in a good place.

There is a large element of me in every role I do. Actors who say they can dive inside a character are either schizophrenic or lying.

If you’re being someone you’re not in an attempt to make it big, then you’re selling yourself and your readers short. The world doesn’t want carbon copies of Darren Rowse or Wendy Piersall. Copycats are stale and fake. They want to see you in your blog! Show yourself.

If you’ve been aiming to be a blockbuster, think again. Sometimes, the best blogs are cult classics.
