Yaro Starak Telepathically Stole My Content

On Monday, I read a post by Internet Based Moms expert Lynette Chandler about how you need friends in a Web 2.0 world. (I’d link, but their site is experiencing a few glitches.)

It’s such a simple concept, certainly one I have known: You need to network to make social media work.

But for some reason, Lynette’s article struck me differently. I made a stunning realization.

Content is not king.

Fast forward to last night and I read a post by blogging guru Yaro Starak where he wrote:

Believing Content Is King Is A Mistake

I knew I should have written a post about this revelation!

Anyway, I’ve adjusted my priorities according to this invaluable wisdom this week. And we’ve seen great results on this blog. Traffic is up. I’m having fun interactions with people.

Here’s how I’m doing it:

1. Commenting on blogs - and following up. I’ve been doing ok in the past with commenting on blogs, but I don’t always return to keep participating in the conversation. This week, I’ve changed that and it’s made a big difference in how people respond to me as a blogger.

2. Revealed my identity. - No one knew that my social media “alias” is “wrtrgrl.” So I’ve started making it more clear. I’ve put my real name on my StumbleUpon profile - and have let others know that wrtrgrl is me. This has really boosted me on SU!

3. Connecting with MyBlogLog visitors - I try to greet as many MBL visitors as I can by thanking them for visiting this site. I also check out their blogs and join their communities.

4. Offering up compliments and encouragement - I love the work of so many bloggers, but I haven’t been telling them that. This week, I’ve been trying to just let people know what a great job they’re doing. I don’t kiss up - for example, I don’t give compliments to A-list bloggers I can’t stand just to get their attention. I just offer kind words to those whose work I genuinely appreciate.

Those are easy, first steps on the way to a good great social media presence. And the great thing about it is that solid participation in networking in your niche is fun. It’s great to connect with people of like mind and the internet makes that even more possible than ever.

Go get your social media game on!
